Maps aka James Chapman is about to release his sophomore LP Turning The Mind, the follow-up to his Mercury Prize shortlisted debut We Can Create. Produced by Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas, it’s a psychedelic monster of a record that explores themes related to the human mind and the way certain stimuli, particularly chemical, can affect it. Indeed. Which brings us to “I Dream Of Crystal”, a song I doubt is about fine glassware. It was the first single James wrote for the LP that is gracefully carried along by a sweeping melody and swirling synths; what he calls “proper blissed-out euphoria”. Although the album material is more indie, Maps is going totally electronic on his singles enlisting Space kingpin Steve Lawler and Italian producer Solo for heady club vibes. The Maps live show is now James and Danish techno dj August and is as he insists “completely banging, we just sledge-hammer people.” The single is available now digitally and Turning Of The Mind is out on Oct 20.
