So how does a 19 year old weekend dj from Sheffield conquer the UK urban scene in just four short years? According to Tom Bell a.k.a Toddla T, it’s as much talent and drive as it is sticking to your guns even when no one’s getting you. Through rigorous gigging, producing and his seminal mixtape Ghettoblaster Vol 1 catching fire, the skinny white kid rode the UK shift to dubstep, digital dancehall and bass-heavy dance music. His debut LP Skanky Skanky (2009), a Fabric Live Mix LP, remixes for Gorillaz, Hot Chip, Major Lazer and a regular slot on BBC Radio 1 all followed. His new LP Watch Me Dance drops in August featuring collaborations with Ms Dynamite, Roisin Murphy, Shola Ama, Skream, Ross Orton, Wayne Marshall and Timberlee. The first taste is an exceptionally funky, old school grind featuring Roots Manuva with SX Feat Lioness, Andrew Weatherall, Heartbreak and Sebastian remixes. The video clip is pretty genius as well.
